"Hello, my name is Josie. My family tells me I am beautiful, extremely intelligent & a true comedian at heart. I am five years old, starting Kindergarten this year, and like 1 in 88 of my peers, I have Autism. Starting traditional school will be a new experience for me, and sometimes new surroundings, sounds or meeting new people can be difficult. I work hard every day to navigate obstacles in my life that others may find easy or take for granted. But most of all, with the love of my family and the continued support of my community, I can aspire to do whatever I want with my life. At the end of the day, that is all anyone can ask for."
Josie is the daughter of Craig & Kim Stilwell.
Craig is CMO of Home Products Etc and personally chose Autism Speaks as EliteFixtures first National charitable partner.

What is Autism?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger syndrome. With the May 2013 publication of the new DSM-5 diagnostic manual, these autism subtypes will be merged into one umbrella diagnosis of ASD.
How Common is Autism?
Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 in 88 American children as on the autism spectrum, a ten-fold increase in prevalence in 40 years. Careful research shows that this increase is only partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. By way of comparison, more children are diagnosed with autism each year than with juvenile diabetes, AIDS or cancer, combined.* ASD affects over 2 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. Moreover, government autism statistics suggest that prevalence rates have increased 10 to 17 percent annually in recent years.
Who is Autism Speaks?
Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Their longtime friend Bernie Marcus donated $25 million to help financially launch the organization. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
